Moving Loads and Materials

Everyone must be safe while moving loads. Safe systems of work include:

  • Using tag lines
  • Using a competent dogman to control loads suspended from a crane (including a telehandler)
  • Keeping loading areas clear of people
  • Keeping areas beneath suspended loads clear of people
  • Creating an isolation zone (or engineered barricade) around a vehicle while it’s being loaded and unloaded – to protect both workers and the public
  • Using a spotter if the loader/unloader is unable to see all areas of the zone
  • Planning the load so that no worker is at risk of a fall from height to strap/unstrap or dog/rig a load.
  • Truck beds having handrails or using platform ladders so that workers are not climbing loads that put them at a risk of fall.
